Characteristics of Autism

A child or adult with autism may have a few or many symptoms. The number, intensity, and severity of the symptoms can range from mild to severe. Regardless, most individuals with autism respond well to a highly structured, specialized program. Treatment should be tailored to each child's or adult's individual needs. Also, it is helpful when teachers and parents use the same approach and coordinate their efforts.

  • Little or no speech

  • Repeating exactly what one hears (echolalia)

  • Little or no interest in playing with others

  • May not like to cuddle or be touched

  • Limited interests and activities

  • Insistence on following strict routine

  • Prone to tantrums, and sometimes self-injurious behavior
